Williams Women in Arts Leadership

Join Pamela Franks, Class of 1956 Director at the Williams College Museum of Art, in conversation with a panel of Williams women making significant contributions to the art and museum world through their leadership.

As part of the bicentennial celebration of the Williams College Society of Alumni, this program will celebrate and discuss the experiences of these women in this year marking 50 years of co-education at Williams, and the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Graduate Program in the History of Art.

The panelists include:

Lucinda Barnes MA ’78
Curator Emerita, and former Chief Curator and Director of Programs and Collections at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive
Barnes has been a leader in Modern and Post-War/Contemporary Art for more than 30 years, and is currently proprietor of Lucinda Barnes Arts, specializing in fine art appraisal and consultation. Prior, she held the position of Chief Curator and Director of Programs and Collections at the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), where she curated and co-curated more than 40 exhibitions and now serves as Curator Emerita.

Laura Hoptman ’83
Executive Director of The Drawing Center
Executive Director of The Drawing Center since 2018, Laura Hoptman has been a curator of contemporary art and a leading participant in the international art conversation for three decades. She came to The Drawing Center after eight years as a curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, an institution where she also began her career in the 1990s as a curator with a specialty in drawing.

Shamim M. Momin ’95
Director of Curatorial Affairs, Henry Art Gallery
Momin oversees the Curatorial, Exhibitions, and Programs departments, and has organized the museum-wide group exhibition, In Plain Sight, as well as current and upcoming exhibitions with Gary Simmons, Math Bass, and Diana Al-Hadid. Momin was Adjunct Professor of Contemporary Art for Williams College for the 2007 and 2008 Semester in New York program, and is currently Affiliate Professor of Art at the School of Art, Art History and Design, University of Washington.

Sasha Suda MA ’05
Director & CEO, National Gallery of Canada
Appointed to the Director & CEO role of Canada’s National Gallery by government in February 2019, Sasha is passionate about the Gallery’s ability to serve and resonate with Canadians from coast to coast to coast. She believes that the visual arts have the power to connect the past to the present and that they can help us to forge a more inspiring, creative, and equitable future.

Victoria Sancho Lobis MA ’02
Sarah Rempel and Herbert S. Rempel ’23 Director, Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College; Associate Professor of Art History, Pomona College
Prior to joining the Pomona community, Lobis worked for the Art Institute of Chicago from 2013 through 2019 in a variety of curatorial and administrative roles, including her service as Interim Chair of the Department of Prints and Drawings from April 2016 through May 2017. Lobis received her B.A. from Yale College, her M.A. from Williams College, and her Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Sarah Needham ’08
Executive Director of the Hill Art Foundation
Sarah is the Executive Director of the Hill Art Foundation, an operating art foundation in Chelsea. Previously she was a Program Officer at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, where she led the Foundation’s U.S. arts and education grantmaking, and worked at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where she spearheaded a public art initiative and ran the young patrons group. Sarah is on the board of Danspace Project. Sarah holds a BA from Williams College and an MBA from NYU.
