Student Gallery Guide Tour: Basquiat’s “Defacement”

Williams College student and Gallery Guide Payton Spencer ’18 investigates Basquiat’s Defacement through the perspective of interactions between the object and its current environment: the WCMA Field Gallery. She is interested in exploring the meanings that are derived when this politically charged object is placed in the historical context of Williams College’s first library reading room, the social context of a space that is now intended for the convergence of people and exchange of ideas, and the political environment of today’s Black Lives Matter movement. How do we, as viewers, interact with this artwork in this time and place? As the journal (placed on the Field Gallery’s coffee table to be filled with thoughts from visitors) inquires: what resonates?
