In Theory: “Nude, Harlem”

WCMA's recent acquisition of James Van Der Zee's "Nude, Harlem," is the focal point for salon-style conversations about the body in art, culture, and society.

This conversation will explore the work in various contexts coming out of political science, women, gender, and sexuality studies, and art history– from Frantz Fanon’s “Black Skin, White Masks,” to Roland Barthes’ “Camera Lucida.” No prior reading necessary.

Conversation participants include Mark Reinhardt, Class of 1956 Professor of American Civilization, Chair of American Studies Program, Catherine Howe, Lecturer in Art, and Kai Greene, Assistant Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
