Ram Head with Broken Horn

1962
Bronze
Jack Zajac (b. 1929, Youngstown, OH)

Resting on a field of crushed stones, Ram Head with Broken Horn is reminiscent of an archaeological excavation site.  Almost alien in appearance with a tail-like form curving and twisting outwards from a deconstructed skull, the sculpture exemplifies the artist’s interest in purification, sacrifice, and rebirth. Zajac created this work by manipulating balls of wax into an abstracted animal skull and adding a horn shape to make it more recognizable before casting it in bronze.

Bequest of Lawrence H. Bloedel, Class of 1923, to Williams College Museum of Art. 77.9.99.
